When Motorola updated their Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade timeline back in February, the list failed to include release time-frames for many US devices – mainly from the Droid lineup. However, we made the assumption that we would see the ICS updates in Q2 or Q3 and that seems to be on target. Motorola has again updated their timeline, but this time including more details on smartphones and tablets from Verizon Wireless.

The Droid RAZR, Droid RAZR MAXX and XOOM 3G/4G LTE are now set to receive ICS by the end of Q2 (either May or June). The Droid Bionic, Droid 4, and XYBOARD 8.2/10.1 will all see updates in Q3. Unfortunately, the Droid 3 and Droid X2 seem to be left out of the Ice Cream Sandwich party and will likely be stuck on Android 2.3 Gingerbread, despite each being less than a year old.

As if the Amazon accessory listing and Bluetooth SIG approval weren’t enough proof, the T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S III SGH-T999 hit the FCC, further confirming previous rumors of its existence. Smartphones often receive certification near release, so perhaps Tmo will be one of the first US carriers with a Galaxy S3 variant in June, like Samsung mentioned. T-Mobile’s version supports AWS/850/1900 bands, so it may be able to squeeze in Samsung’s in-house Exynos 4 quad-core chipset due to the lack of 4G LTE connectivity. The AT&T, Verizon and Sprint models will likely come packed with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor in order to support the LTE technology. We’ll have to wait a bit longer to find out exactly which configuration Tmo chose.

The organisers of the Titanic Lockdown festival in Belfast have announced its cancellation owing to poor ticket sales.

The festival, which was due to take place at the T13 complex on the weekend of June 1-2, was to feature headliners New Order and Happy Mondays, with a support bill including Anna Calvi, Errors, Ghostpoet, Factory Floor and Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry.

A statement has just been released:

Due to poor ticket sales in a challenging economic climate, it is with great regret and disappointment that we must announce the cancellation of the 2012 Titanic Lockdown summer festival.

Despite a huge wave of goodwill, ticket sales have been significantly slower than forecast for an event featuring such high profile acts. As a result, it will not be possible to deliver the event.

We would like to offer our sincere thanks to all who have supported, endorsed and believed in the project. In addition, we offer good wishes to all local festival organisers, such as CQAF, Belsonic, Sunflower Fest, T Vital, Glasgowbury, Open House, Seedhead Arts, T13 and all local promoters and artists currently beating the drum for the Arts in Northern Ireland. They make a wonderful contribution to the cultural life of our city in these bleak economic times.

No one is more disappointed than us that the event will not now be taking place, but unfortunately the circumstances are simply beyond our control.

A few hours after changing the limit on Google Music itself, this message appeared on the Google Play support page:

Yesterday we made a change to our device policy for music on Google Play.  Any user can associate up to 10 devices to his or her account.  Once you have connected 10 devices, you may add a new device only by deauthorizing an existing one from your account, and you may do this up to four times per year.

We limit the number of times you can swap out new devices at the request of some of our music partners in an effort to limit abuse. We understand this has caused some issues for users who often deauthorize and reauthorize the same device, and we are currently re-implementing the solution in a way that works for our users and music partners.

We apologize for any inconvenience and will update this page as new changes are made.

As many had suspected, the new limitation was a stipulation of Google’s music publishing partners – who don’t exactly have the best reputation when it comes to technological freedom (or common sense). At the moment and for the foreseeable future you’re unlimited on the number of devices you can authorize and de-authorize, so if you’re worried, head over to the Google Play Music settings page and remove your old devices or ROMs now.

The issue at hand isn’t necessarily the restriction itself, it’s how Google Play “sees” devices and software. If A Galaxy Nexus owner connects to the Google Play Store with a stock ROM, then CyanogenMod 9, then AOKP, it might be identified as three different devices. Frequent ROM flashers (not to mention phone reviewers!) can see a massive and disjointed list of devices and ROMs. You can see my personal list below, including a ton of devices I’ve reviewed for Android Community and various personal ROMs.

Google hasn’t said how it will change the system, but they have promised to keep us posted. Considering how fast they changed their policy when notified of the problems therein, I’d say they’ve earned the benefit of the doubt.
