Michael Smiley

Posted by - September 28th, 2011

Whilst there are still a few months left in the year, it looks certain that Kill List is going to be on a lot of people’s ‘Best Film’ lists. Made on an unassuming budget, the film follows friends Jay (Neil Maskell) and Gal (Michael Smiley) as they taken on one last job after leaving the armed forces, and are dragged into a murky underworld of death and chaos. Far from being your standard Brit-flick, director Ben Wheatley has crafted a film which manages to be an assault on both the senses and genre, shifting and twisting out of reach before you can truly pin it down.

At the heart of the film lies the relationship between these two former servicemen, as they struggle to reconcile their past with an increasingly uncertain future. Jay is pudgy and moody, oblivious to the realities of his post-conflict life, whilst Gal is the archetypical ‘cheeky chappie’, playful and irreverent, but with real loneliness hidden behind the frequently forced smiles.

AU catches up with Northern Irish comedian and actor Michael Smiley to get under the skin of the film everyone will be talking about very soon.

Kill List is one of those films that shocks the viewer out of their comfort zone, and makes them start asking questions. How do you think the film is going to be received by audiences?

I’d no preconceptions beforehand. I knew it was a good film, and I really loved the process of working through it, and we had high hopes for it. But it’s an indie film, you know? If it does well and people like it, that’s good enough. But then all of a sudden the press just went mental for it, and the feedback’s been great. So I don’t know! Sometimes I know what’s happening and other times…

A lot of people will know you primarily as a comic actor. Your performance as Gal is multi-layered and challenging.

I like to challenge people and to be challenged by them – it’s in my nature. Ultimately, a lot of people don’t know me from anything other than Spaced [as Northern Irish cycle courier Tyres] or the comedy circuit. Certainly back home in Belfast, a lot of people might know from the odd bit of TV that I do. But as far as my acting chops are concerned, I’ve done a lot more drama than comedy on television and film. Apart from Down Terrace [2009] which I’d done with Ben Wheatley as well, this was the first time something had ever been written for me. The character of Gal was written for me, not for anyone else, I didn’t audition for it. That was a massive compliment, and to be able to spend a bit of time with it and wrap yourself around the character is lovely.

Whilst the film is a tour-de-force in genre film-making, easily moving between horror, crime, thriller, and drama, it’s ultimately the relationship between the two main characters that drives it along. Was there a natural chemistry between you and Neil Maskell?

It’s funny, because we didn’t know each other at all! I’d met Neil twice before the filming. We bumped into each other when a friend of his was doing a stand up show on the same bill as me. It was really funny because I came off stage and we were both wearing exactly the same t-shirt! We just burst out laughing, cos we didn’t know each other at all. But pretty much by the time we got up there [on location in Sheffield] we became firm friends. It was inspired casting by Ben to see something in the two of us. Both of us just really get on, and we’re best mates now. There was a lot of trust there working alongside him, and it makes you really focus your chops.

Kill List is Ben Wheatley’s second film after the well received Down Terrace, which you also appeared in. What is it like working with a young director who is racking up the ‘critically acclaimed’ plaudits?

He’s ruined me for other directors! I measure other directors by him, and I don’t really mean to. For somebody a good bit younger than me, he’s been touched by genius, and he’s got a real empathy. He cares about this story, and he cares about the actors, and what he has around him. There’s no real egos, and he’s very generous. The script is there, and the script is tight, but if your improvisation goes off the script and it works, then it stays in. We got a few really funny riffs in, and he always just let us keep going. You feel integral to the whole procedure, and it’s just inspiring. To be in the middle of all that creativity is exciting!

You were allowed to improvise dialogue, and the final credits read: “Written by Ben Wheatley, Amy Jump, additional dialogue by the cast.”

You feel like a child! If you give a child its voice, it’s going to say some amazing things. If you just keep telling it where to stand and what to do, it’ll do what you want, but you’re not going to get its soul. Some directors treat actors like movable props – you walk in, there’s a black mark on the floor, you say your line, blah blah blah, don’t bump into the furniture. With Ben it’s not like that. The whole thing is really fluid, and without sounding too wanky, that’s amazing! I don’t know enough about acting, but what I do know is that if you let me be as natural as possible, let me fly, then you’re going to get the best out of me.

Part of the strength of the film is its grasp of the unexpected. Rarely does Kill List do what you think it’s going to. Has it been hard to preserve that sense of mystery?

Some people are looking for the reveal because they’ve seen spoilers, and when they see it they’re like, ‘Is that it?’. It’s like saying, ‘I’ve got you the best Christmas present ever, and I’m going to tell you about it every day, and you’ll never guess what it is!’ and then you open it and you’re like, ‘Is that it? I thought it was going to be the Taj Mahal, wrapped up in Buckingham Palace, with the Vatican sprinkled over the top’.

But when the film finally does reveal itself, it’s one of those moments that people are going to be talking about for a long time afterwards.

We’re going to have to open a Kill List Therapy Session, a drop-in for people who want to talk about the subplots! People are asking me all the time now, ‘What do you think it’s saying?’ And I have nothing to say on that matter! How often do you come away from a film asking more questions? There’s nothing better. You rarely do that with films, they give you exactly what you want.

Everything about Kill List seems sure to subvert the expectations of what the viewer wants, and it rarely offers up any easy explanations for what’s happening.

What you tend to get with films now is: a love story, redemption at the end, a car chase, she gets topless, he shows his buff, they get it together at the end, and have a quirky fat kid. And that’s about the height of it – entertainment by numbers. This is a piece of art, I think.

A piece of art that is going to leave a lot of people hungry for answers!

Call me any time – the surgery is always open…

Kill List is showing at the Queen’s Film Theatre, Belfast until September 29.

Samsung GT-I9250 Nexus Prime sees Bluetooth certification

Posted by - September 28th, 2011

We’ve got a massive amount of news and rumors surrounding the upcoming Google hero phone made by Samsung, the following bit of content falling in the first category. What we’ve got here is a Bluetooth certification for device GT-I9250, one thus far tied only to the name Nexus Prime. Samsung has quite the firestorm started here around what we’re expecting will be the hero device for Android Ice Cream Sandwich, each news bit adding to what must soon be a legendary device indeed.

We’ve got news that this device has already been hanging out at Verizon, that a Samsung roadmap has already leaked the launch date for the device as well as Ice Cream Sandwich – two more confirmations coming about a week later. It’s not difficult to see why this device would garner such massive interest as each Google hero device (the Nexus S being the last) have been not only massively popular devices, they’ve turned out to be rather well made and long-lasting devices as well.

To see everything we’ve got on the matter, check out the Nexus Prime portal and get severely educated. It’s not every day we have a phone gain such attention before its release unless it’s got a stacked set of specs, and given that this device has no real solid specs released at all at this moment, we’ve gotta keep our eyes open. Will you be amongst those running to the stores on release day?

CyanogenMod and FreeXperia team up to offer CM7 on 10 Sony Ericsson devices

Posted by - September 27th, 2011

Back in August we first heard a few minor details that the members of CyanogenMod were planning to support more device, especially a wide array of Sony Ericsson smartphones. Yesterday Cyanogen himself (Steve Kondik) confirmed support for 10 new SE phones over on Google+. With a joint effort by the CM team and the group known as FreeXperia we can expect to see CM7 and future releases support many Sony Ericsson and Xperia play devices moving forward.

While none of the phones pictured above are Sony Ericsson it does show the wide array of smartphones supported by CyanogenMod, and now with 10 more coming I’m sure plenty of users are excited for things to come. Detailed on Google+ Cyanogen mentioned all 10 SE phones they plan to initially support — they include:

- Xperia Arc
- Xperia Neo
- Xperia Mini
- Xperia Mini Pro
- Xperia Play
- Xperia Ray
- Xperia X10
- Xperia X8
- Xperia X10 Mini
- Xperia X10 Mini Pro

Kondik also mentioned that the FreeXperia team is now a part of the CyanogenMod development group, this means that with upcoming releases from Sony Ericsson like the rumored Nozomi users can expect to see support by CM7 or 8 for many new phones as they come out.

Great news for all the Sony Ericsson users out and around, CM is one of the greatest custom ROM’s available for Android and will be for a long time to come.
