Guardian: Chinese labor camps using slave labor to farm for gold in WoW

“Prison bosses made more money forcing inmates to play games than they do forcing people to do manual labour,” Liu told the Guardian. “There were 300 prisoners forced to play games. We worked 12-hour shifts in the camp. I heard them say they could earn 5,000-6,000rmb [£470-570] a day. We didn’t see any of the money. The computers were never turned off.”

Memories from his detention at Jixi re-education-through-labour camp in Heilongjiang province from 2004 still haunt Liu. As well as backbreaking mining toil, he carved chopsticks and toothpicks out of planks of wood until his hands were raw and assembled car seat covers that the prison exported to South Korea and Japan. He was also made to memorise communist literature to pay off his debt to society.

But it was the forced online gaming that was the most surreal part of his imprisonment. The hard slog may have been virtual, but the punishment for falling behind was real.

“If I couldn’t complete my work quota, they would punish me physically. They would make me stand with my hands raised in the air and after I returned to my dormitory they would beat me with plastic pipes. We kept playing until we could barely see things,” he said.

There are several independent things that are very, very wrong about this.

Izar 1.0 for iOS – Retro-Style, Turn-Based, Strategy RPG

Posted by - May 28th, 2011

St. Petersburg, Russian Federation – SVP Mobile today is pleased to introduce Izar 1.1 for iOS, their new retro-style, turn-based, strategy RPG. Set in an ancient, mythical kingdom, the game is an epic saga about a knight who returns home after a long journey to find his castle partly destroyed and his army scattered. The role-playing aspect of the game involves spells, quests, and journeys to help restore the lost symbols of Magic, Arrow, and Sword to the castle. Whenever combat is required the game switches to turn-based, tactical mode. Reminiscent of classic RPGs such as Heroes of Might and Magic, Izar includes magic, combat, castle building, training and equipping soldiers, and managing monetary resources.

Played in landscape mode, the game launches with a parchment scroll that establishes the story and goals of the game. “The Way to Home – You are back to your castle after long months of traveling across distant lands to find it partly destroyed and your army scattered. The magic tower is no longer of any help. As your elite warriors were leaving the castle, they lost the symbols of Magic, Arrow and Sword. You must bring them back to the castle.”

Like the best RPGs, the game is highly detail-oriented. Knights, elf archers, dwarfs, paladins, and beholders may be recruited for the player’s army, and each has his own Health and Attack values, as well as Price. There is a wide variety of armor and weapons available to increase the power of soldiers under special, specified circumstances. Also present are numerous, danger-filled locales presenting unique challenges and rewards. Castle upgrades bestow additional capabilities to the player’s troops. Games may be saved and resumed at a later time, allowing for protracted, strategic gameplay.

Feature Highlights:
* Tactical combat involving attack and control spells
* Building a castle to upgrade your troops
* Building a mages tower to unlock new spells
* Free navigation through the game world with dozens of fantastic locations

“In creating Izar we sought to combine the best of magical RPGs and turn-based combat games,” stated Sergey Voronov. “Spend a few hours listening to Renaissance music and the chirping of birds in the forest, as you ride across the countryside on noble quests, seeking victory and the return of balance to your kingdom.”

Language Support:
* US English and Russian

Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
* Requires iOS 3.2 or later (iOS 4.3 tested)
* 27.8 MB

Pricing and Availability:
Izar 1.1 is .99 (USD) and available worldwide through the App Store in the Games category. Review copies are available upon request.

AMD Roadmap Leaked “DESNA” Tablets Detailed

Posted by - May 27th, 2011

If you’ll remember back a few weeks we had a post up on AMD and their possible move to make chips that’d make some tablet-consumers very happy. Now there’s been one big massive leak of a multi-page roadmap for AMD floating around and what do you know? Tablets are here! The current arena of AMD’s chips contains AMD C-30 and C-50 chips that are straight up aimed at Intel’s Atom chips for notebooks. These new C-series chips include an iterated AMD Radeon graphics core that’s capable of handling 3D graphics acceleration and 1080p video playback. Sounds like its tablet party time.

These processors are not the same as the ones that’ll be coming out via these future plans, but they’re certainly suftboards on which the future is going to roll in on. The NEW set of chips is going to be a Fusion Z-Series and will be code-named “DESNA.” Reminds me of a similar code-naming of future chips we found out about back at Mobile World Congress. Desna chips are, according to these documents, set to support DirectX 11 graphics, Adobe Flash Player video acceleration, and smooth streaming of HD video. Hardware graphics acceleration for Internet Explorer 9, Microsoft Office 10, and Windows 7 visual effects are included too, which makes us think that they’ve got at least part of their vision set for Microsoft.

On the other hand, there’s always room for Android, right? Also as liliputing notes, Desna will certainly need to have low power consumption for long battery life in combination with high power if AMD hopes to compete with tablets using next-generation Intel Atom Oak Trail chips or ARM-based processors. What do you think, does AMD stand a chance?
