Battle of the Tablets: Apple iPad 2 vs Motorola Xoom vs HP TouchPad vs BlackBerry PlayBook

Posted by - December 29th, 2010

My how things change within a single year. Apple’s iPad was previously the king of tablets, as the alternatives in 2010 couldn’t match up or they were simply unavailable. Now, it seems we’ll have some tough decisions to make in 2011. With Apple announcing the iPad 2 today, it’s only natural to size it up against the Motorola Xoom, HP TouchPad, and BlackBerry PlayBook. Platform preference is huge here, seeing how the four devices run different operating systems in iOS 4.3, Android 3.0, webOS 3.0, and BB Tablet OS. If you’re having a tough time deciding, check out the chart below to see how they all compare. (Source: Engadget)

Samsung Galaxy Pro QWERTY candybar confirmed, coming to Three [Video]

Posted by - December 21st, 2010

Samsung has outed its latest Galaxy family smartphone, though this time it’s half touchscreen and half physical keyboard. The Samsung Galaxy Pro has a 2.8-inch touchscreen above a QWERTY ‘board, running Android 2.2 Froyo on an 800MHz processor.

Around the back there’s a 3-megapixel camera, while inside there’s confirmed WiFi (but presumably Bluetooth and GPS as well). Samsung has installed what looks to be a tweaked version of TouchWiz, and the Galaxy Pro will apparently also have the Social Hub Premium pre-loaded.

No word on pricing or specific availability, though we already know at least one carrier readying to offer the Galaxy Pro. UK network Three says the smartphone is “coming soon” and offers the following video to tide you over.

Microsoft re-rolls out WP7 update for Samsung devices

Posted by - December 15th, 2010

As you may recall, some Samsung Windows Phone 7 units had difficulty updating when Microsoft launched the initial roll-out of the first update to the platform. The issues caused quite a bit of controversy, since the update is minimal at best. All it does it prepare your device for future updates, like the “NoDo” update coming this month with copy and paste functionality. Well, Microsoft released the following statement, revealing that the update is all set for another attempt at updating Samsung phones. From Microsoft: Starting today, we plan to resume rolling out the February update to Samsung phones. Meanwhile, we’re continuing to dispatch the update to other Windows Phone models. As has been the case, the software patch is being sent out on a rolling schedule. You’ll see a message on your phone when it’s available. During the past week the engineering team has pinpointed and fixed problems that were preventing a small percentage of Windows Phones from installing the February software patch. We apologize again for the delay and continue looking for ways to improve the update process.

No Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 hardware tweaks; Honeycomb slate still on track insists exec

Posted by - December 11th, 2010

Samsung has insisted the Galaxy Tab 10.1 Honeycomb tablet is still on track with its original release plans, denying speculation that the company were returning the 10.1-inch slate to the engineering lab so as to make it more competitive against the iPad 2. Having been quoted as saying that “[Samsung] will have to improve the parts [of the Galaxy Tab 10.1] that are inadequate” last week, Executive Vice President Lee Don-Joo told Yonhap News this weekend that the tablet wasn’t being reworked.

Speaking shortly after Apple unveiled the second-gen iPad, Don-Joo had singled out the slate’s slim build as a key improvement. Samsung had previously been championing the Galaxy Tab 10.1′s thinner chassis than the first-gen iPad, as well as its lighter weight.

“We will continue to make every effort to provide the most powerful, well-designed and productive mobile device to customers” Don-Joo now says, though it seems Samsung only has pricing left to differentiate the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Watch Steve Jobs’ Apple iPad 2 keynote in full (video)

Posted by - December 7th, 2010

By now, the world knows the ins and outs of Apple’s iPad 2, which is scheduled to arrive on March 11. It features an A5 1GHz dual-core processor, an ultra slim profile, and two cameras for Facetiming – to name some of the features. We’ve already posted about the full specs, features, images, and videos of the iPad 2, but if that’s not enough, why not watch Steve Jobs’ full keynote address? Apple didn’t stream the proceedings live, so unless you were actually at the San Francisco event, you probably found out about the details through text. Check out the lengthy video below. Note: view a chart comparing the iPad 2, TouchPad, PlayBook, and Xoom. (Source: Apple)
