MVP Hu Lung-mao had dominant performances on consecutive nights as Song-shan High School completed a unprecedented feat of a three-peat after a 87-59 rout of Nan-shan High School Sunday night, becoming the first school in HBL history to win three straight men’s title.

Li-chi HS, San-min HS, Tsai-shin HS and Nan-shan HS have all repeated as champions in the past 22 years, but no school was able to complete a three-peat until Song-shan did it.

6180035-2523289Arguably the best player in HBL this year, Hu had 29 points, 12 rebounds, five steals and three blocks in the title game after tallying 35 points and 13 boards in the semifinal game.

Hu, a 195cm lefty forward-center, was named the MVP with an average of 32 pints and 13.5 rebounds in two Final Four games.

Song-shan has won three titles in four Finals appearances. It lost to San-min in the finals in 2000 before defeating Nen-ren 69-61 and 83-80 in 2009 and 2010.

Hu also became the first player to lead his high school to three title in three years. He played pivotal roles in Song-shan’s previous title runs despite not winning the MVPs. Forward Hung Kang-chao scored 48 points in his last high school game last year to win the MVP honor. San yi-ching, a undersized 193cm center, was named MVP after a 16-point, 6 rebounds title game outing in 2009.

“We have made history and this group of players deserve this honor. I’m proud of them, ” Song-shan head coach Huang Wan-long said. Huang and Hu were both in tears in their long hugs after the final buzzer.

Song-shan, which has been known for its tenacious man-to-man defense, lived up to its nickname “the green shield” again in the second quarter, when it outscored Nan-shan 25-4 and jumped to a double-digit lead it never gave up.

SN01_001Song-shan led 44-24 at the half and all Nan-shan could do was cut the deficit to 15 points, but Hu and Song-shan’s outside shooters made several crucial plays to increase the lead to 20 points.

Song-shan sophomore center Fan Shih-en had a career night of 16 points and 6 rebounds. Guards Huang Po-wei and Yu Yi-hsiang scored 15 each.

Yang Hsing-chih paced Nan-shan with 19 points.

In the third place game, talented point guard Chen Ying-chun had 23 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and two blocks to finish his high school career and lead Nen-ren to a 82-70 win over San-min High School.

However, Chen had to graduate without a HBL title trophy in his hands. Nen-ren lost to Song-shan in the HBL Finals in 2009 and 2010 and failed to make the finals after the semifinal loss to Nan-shan Saturday night.

Chen, who suffered a minor concussion in the semifinal game, was determined to play in his final game despite doctors and coaches advised him against it. “I refused to sit on the bench in my final game, ” Chen was quoted as saying.

With Chen controling the tempo, Nen-ren led by as many as 22 points as San-min never had a chance to mount a serious comeback run.

Center Wang Jen-chieh had 28 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks for Nen-ren. Tien Cheng-tung had 11 points and eight boards.

San-min, the only final four teams from southern Taiwan, was led by Wu Song-wei’s 30 points. Center Shih Yen-tsung had 19 points and 15 rebounds.

Android sails past BlackBerry to become the number one smartphone platform

Posted by - March 30th, 2010

Like watching a semi rumble past from the side of the road, Android has sailed past BlackBerry to become the number on smartphone platform in terms of market share. Nearly one third (31.2%) of US Smart phones now run the Google operating system, while only 30.4% of smartphones ran on BlackBerry during the same period from February 2010 to January 2011. Apple’s share of the smartphone pie has remained rather flat during the time, while Microsoft’s market share was cut nearly in half, even after the debut of Windows Phone 7. The rise of the Android’s platform has occurred in just over two years and can largely be due to Google’s open source philosophy which has been adopted by a wide range of smartphone manufactures, but really hit it’s stride after Motorola released the Droid in 2009.

At the beginning of 2010, RIM/BlackBerry enjoyed a 42% market saturation, while Google had just 7% market share. In the twelve months that followed, Google increased it’s footprint to the point where over 350,000 activations of over 170 different Android handsets were being done daily. The leap was able to improve its share well over four fold to gain dominance in the marketplace, leaving all three competitors wondering how the world it happened. The reality is, since Google’s Android operating system is free to implement, it was shovel ready, therefore allowing manufacturers to dive into the Cellphone business with little OS development. And that’s not all. With the ability to bypass OS development, handset manufacturers have been able to cut development time for hardware in half, making a new smart phone hitting the market almost a daily affair.

Although Android is number one in the smartphone category, it still lags behind Nokia’s Symbian OS for web enabled phones in general. But that lead is being chipped away quickly and it’s been stated that by 2014, Android will be the number one cellphone handset in the world. So, with such momentum on Google’s side, the question is, can Apple, RIM and Microsoft turn back the tide, or will be a simple case of too little too late?

Samsung Adds Five New NX Lenses

Posted by - March 28th, 2010

Last week, Samsung announced five new lenses for their NX mirrorless camera system. Like the Panasonic and Olympus Micro Four Thirds cameras and the Sony NEX cameras, the Samsung NX system has interchangeable lenses but eliminates the mirror and optical viewfinder of a traditional SLR and replaces it with an electronic viewfinder or just a rear LCD display. This allows for a smaller, lighter camera and lenses. Samsung officially launched their NX camera in January of 2010 with the 14-megapixel NX10. The five new lenses, which include an 18-200mm zoom, a 16mm f/2.8 pancake lens, and an 85mm f/1.4 portrait lens, make a total of ten lenses for the NX system.

The five new Samsung NX lenses are a 60mm f/2.8 macro, a new 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 image-stabilized standard zoom, the 85mm f/1.4 prime, super-compact 16mm f/2.8 pancake prime and the image-stabilized 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 zoom. The 60mm macro and 85mm portrait lens use fast, quiet “SSA” auto focus technology and both offer full-time manual focus touch-up, even when the lens is in auto focus mode. The large f/1.4 aperture on the 85mm makes it great for portraits or other photos where you want a sharp subject and out-of-focus background. The 18-200mm and 16-80mm zooms use Samsung’s Voice Coil Motor (VCM) technology for fast, silent auto focus that won’t make any intrusive noise when the camera is in movie mode. All five of the new lenses work with Samsung’s recently introduced i-Function system, which offers access to key camera controls (shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation, white balance, ISO) via a button on i-Function-compatible lenses.

Besides the 20-50mm kit lens that will be sold with the NX100, Samsung has six more i-Function NX lenses scheduled for the next year. There are four prime lenses: a 16mm, an 85mm, a 60mm macro and a 20mm f/2.8 pancake lens; and two zooms: an 18-200mm and a 16-80mm. The i-Function concept is certainly a great idea and looks like it could be a big step forward for intuitive camera controls. I wonder if it will be one of those things that all camera systems are using in a couple of years and we all wonder how we ever lived without it.

Samsung has introduced three NX cameras since the system was announced, early last year. The NX10 and NX11 are both SLR-style cameras with electronic viewfinders. The Samsung NX100 is a smaller, interchangeable lens camera with no viewfinder. epiNote HD 1.0.5 – Unique electronic note-taking app for the iPad

Posted by - March 28th, 2010

Los Angeles, California – Daydex Software today is pleased to announce the latest release of epiNote HD and epiNote HD Plus for the iPad. epiNote HD is an electronic note-taking utility that allows users to make detailed notes, draw, sketch and annotate drawings and photos on their iPad. Uniquely, epiNote HD uses a pantograph concept to “write small” yet write legibly. Touch actions are used to easily re-position and re-size content anywhere on the screen with precision so that detailed and copious notes can be taken. Files may be emailed, or saved on the iPad.

With this app, users can use a finger to write, jot down their thoughts and ideas, draw or doodle on their iPad. What’s cool is that the content on the screen may be easily re-sized and re-positioned accurately so that the use of the entire screen space is maximized. For writing in tight spaces, users can finger write normally in a box and the output is automatically scaled in a target area which can also be easily re-positioned and re-scaled. Thus compact, neat and very legible writing can be achieved for taking detailed notes.

Here is a partial list of features offered in epiNote HD:
* Easy-to-use and intuitive interface
* Multiple pen color and width settings
* Pen/Eraser quick switch
* Freestyle finger drawing and writing
* Pantograph to automatically scale writing
* Select screen areas to cut (move) or copy, scale and paste accurately
* Clip from photos in Photo Album, scale and annotate
* Extended height write box for other languages (e.g. Chinese)
* Undo and Redo
* Email as.png files
* Online help file
* Video tutorials on website

Currently, epiNote HD is available for iPad. Daydex software is continuously adding features to improve the user experience and an iPhone version will be released in Q2, 2011. epiNote HD allows photos from the iPad photo album to be mixed in, positioned and scaled. Great for customized picture e-cards, personalized with finger-written greetings. epiNote HD is free. Upgrade to epiNote HDPlus for .99 for enhanced features including embedding web content, maps, pdf support, png file management using iTunes and more.

Device Requirements:
* iPad
* Requires iOS 4.2 or later
* 0.2 MB

Pricing and Availability

epiNote HD is developed by Daydex Software with over 20 years experience in the IT industry. epiNote HD was born as a result of wanting to use the iPad as an electronic note taking device, replacing pen and paper. After failing to find a suitable app, Daydex developers recognized that there was an opportunity to take advantage of the technology offered by the iPad, to create an app that was not only fun but also really useful. Microsoft to pay Nokia $1 billion for Windows Phone 7 handsets

Posted by - March 26th, 2010

When the news broke that Nokia had entered an alliance with Microsoft to make Windows Phone 7 handsets exclusively, everyone thought it was a headslap moment. Now the word is out as to what Microsoft had to do to sweeten the deal. Microsoft will pay Nokia more than Billion to promote and develop Windows Phone 7 handsets. In return, Nokia will rebate back a fee to Redmond for every copy of Windows used on it’s phones. The Billion dollar payment was designed to not only keep Nokia from jumping on the Android bandwagon, but will also help to offset the amount lost by Nokia to focus exclusively on the Windows Phone 7 platform.

Although the entire costs won’t be required up front, a percentage will go to Nokia before the company begins selling handsets. And by contrast the royalty payments by Nokia back to Microsoft will recoup the investment and even make a profit on the Windows Phone 7 platform. The deal is also rumored to be the end of Nokia’s MeeGo smartphone which was scheduled to be released this year.

Once a major player in the cellphone industry, Nokia lost significant marketshare once Apple released the iPhone and Google set the world on fire with it’s shotgun Android approach. Nokia has been scrambling to gain back lost ground ever since. So it wasn’t surprising that they would grab the Windows Phone 7 Life preserver, but even at that, Nokia was wary, no doubt to do the nagging SD card issue that’s been plaguing Windows Phone 7 hand sets since December. Both companies have seen stock decline since news of the deal was announced, but Nokia has seen a greater loss to the tune of 26 percent.
